Welcome to the November - December 2004 NAHI forum

Good Customer Relations
When inspecting homes the inspector must respect the property rights of the seller. I try to reassure the seller that my inspection will be gentle to their home and the inspection is visual in nature and non-destructive. Buyers will also appreciate your thoughtfulness and attention to detail and notice that you are treating their new home with respect. . . . keep reading

Praise Pays, All the Way to the Bank
By Mike Crow, Millionaire Inspector Community
You have them. Everybody has some. They're that core of clients or agents who think your company is the best thing since low-carb ice cream. (If you really stink, you at least have your mother.) They sing your praises so well, you wish you could hire yourself! But did you know that harnessing your clients' and agents' affections can put money in the bank? The key is getting their praises on paper. . . . keep reading

Spy's in our Machine
By Rick Bunzel, CRI
It started out with a few phone calls from home inspectors I knew. Their browsers were acting strangely or were slow. Sometimes they would find their homepage changed. Most of the time the fixes were simple and only took a few minutes. Soon I was getting calls that popups were happening all the time and their homepage was changed permanently to something called "aboutblank." Welcome to the latest test of our computing patience, "Spyware." Spyware is akin to parasites we get walking through the woods. Walk or browse into the wrong area and these little beauties jump onto your system and go to work watching your Internet activity or looking through your data for valuable information. . . . keep reading

Moisture Management in Buildings
By Raymond E. Patenaude, P.E., CIAQP
Mold is gold. That has become the favorite new phrase of many plaintiff attorneys, not to mention some restoration/remediation companies and a few forensic engineering firms. Mold claims are the hot new item, much like asbestos claims not too long ago. Most of the mold related assignments investigated by FORCON have involved an assessment of the extent of mold contamination resulting from a covered loss in a residence, usually a plumbing related leak, and the preparation of mold remediation plans. . . . keep reading

Furnace Inspections
By Ellis Prach, Heat Exchanger Experts, Inc
What a tragedy when you read that a homeowner has been hospitalized from carbon monoxide poisoning, is comatose or has actually died from a faulty furnace heat exchanger. Another tragedy is when an educated home inspector gives his customer a proper diagnosis on a potentially dangerous furnace and then an HVAC company comes in for a second opinion and informs the homeowner that the furnace is fine and should last another ten years. What happens then? Being in the heating business for 45 years, I have been there and can tell you first hand what happens. . . . keep reading
