Building Envelope Failure Parts 1 & 2

Summary: These two sessions focused on understanding the exterior building envelope and its potential failures.

Steve Verssen, President, Vertech Inspection & Consulting Inc.
Speaker Bio:
Steve is a degreed mechanical engineer of the University of Cincinnati with over 40 years of experience in construction including residential, commercial and industrial properties. His industrial background lies within the paper, chemical and machine tool industries. He specializes in forensic building envelope failures with diagnostic skills to interpret and convey findings in a meaningful manner. Steve is in his 24th year of operating Vertech Inspection and Consulting Services and has performed over 15,000 property inspections.

"The webinar topic, moisture damage behind siding, is a matter near and dear to many home inspectors' hearts. Several years ago, the Southeastern Pennsylvania local NAHI chapter started exploring the catastrophic failure of hard coat stucco and veneer stone, somewhere in the range of 80-90 percent failure rate.
The webinar instructor, Steve Verssen, a home inspector specializes in forensic building envelope failures. The program was smartly laid out with onscreen diagrams and the pictures brought home the point. Steve explained the importance of flashing details on all forms of siding. Unfortunately, these essential pieces are incorrectly installed or left out altogether. He explained how to look for flashing details at a typical home inspection. There were also pictures of homes where failures had occurred. Truly, everyone that has or will inspect wood framing and cladding of any type, including vinyl in their market should have attended. You do yourself and your clients a grave disservice if you don't gain as much knowledge as possible and stay up to date on current trends and situations."
