Texas

Texas Licensure (Enacted 1991)

Texas home inspectors are licensed and regulated by the Texas Real Estate Commission. Home inspectors may be licensed under the following categories: 1) Apprentice Inspector, 2) Real Estate Inspector, and 2) Professional Inspector. The following licensing requirements apply:

Apprentice Inspector

  • 18 years of age or older

  • U.S. citizen or legal alien

  • Identify a Professional Inspector sponsor

Real Estate Inspector

  • 18 years of age or older

  • U.S. citizen or legal alien

  • Identify a Professional Inspector sponsor

  • Successful completion of three months and 25 home inspection under direct supervision of a Professional Inspector

  • Successful completion of 90 hours of approved education

  • Successful passage of an approved examination

Professional Inspector

  • 18 years of age or older

  • U.S. citizen or legal alien

  • Have served as a Real Estate Inspector for one year and 175 home inspections under direct supervision of a Professional Inspector

  • Successful completion of 30 hours of approved education

  • Successful passage of an approved examination
