North Carolina

North Carolina Licensure (Enacted 1993)

North Carolina home inspectors are licensed and regulated by the Home Inspector Licensure Board under the Department of Insurance. Home inspectors may be licensed under two categories: 1) Associate Home Inspector and 2) Licensed Home Inspector. The following licensing requirements apply:

Associate Home Inspector

  • Successful completion of high school or equivalent

  • Cite an employer or affiliated individual who will supervise inspections

  • Successful completion of the approved examination

Licensed Home Inspector

  • Successful completion of the approved examination

  • Successful completion of high school or equivalent and have been an Associate Home Inspector for one year and 100 home inspections OR

  • Be a licensed general contractor, professional engineer, or architect

The following surety bond requirements apply:

  • Surety bond - $5,000
