Dimensional Shingle Failure

In my home inspection and roof consulting business I am discovering with increasing regularity a significant loss of granulation in lighter weight dimensional shingles that are less than 5 years old. The question is how much loss is normal wear and tear and what is excessive? The second issue is at what point do I inform the client of a deterioration that will adversely affect the long-term performance of the product? . . .
